A wide photo helps, but it does not show pile depth, hidden concrete, or the longest boards. A useful debris request identifies the material, approximate footprint, and route from pile to truck.

Measure the pile, not the old shed

Record approximate length, width, and average height. Add one familiar object for scale only if it can be placed safely beside the pile.

Name the material groups

  • Clean or painted lumber
  • Roofing shingles and felt
  • Sheet metal or resin panels
  • Concrete blocks or slab pieces
  • Mixed household trash

Show the bottom and sides

Take photos from more than one direction. Hidden masonry, soil, and waterlogged material can change weight and acceptance.

Mark sharp hazards

Do not reach into a pile to remove nails. Tell the hauler about protruding fasteners, broken glass, and unstable stacked sections before anyone begins loading.

Virginia DEQ publishes current information about solid and hazardous waste programs. Unknown or suspect material should be identified before ordinary hauling.
